Associate Attorney | Fairfax, VA | $130,000 to $200,000 | Insurance Defense

Ask an associate why they're looking and the answer is rarely the money. Usually it's that they can't picture what year five looks like.

This firm has been answering that question for more than 25 years. And the money happens to be good too.

I'm recruiting an associate for a mid sized insurance defense firm in Fairfax, VA. Attorneys there tend to stay, turnover is low, and many of the senior people were promoted from within.

The numbers

• $130,000 to $200,000 base, depending on experience
\n
• More than 25 years in continuous operation
\n
• Four Virginia offices: Fairfax, Richmond, Norfolk and Roanoke
\n
• Well over 1,000 new cases a year
\n
• 10 practice groups
\n
• Five jurisdictions across the firm. The Fairfax office handles three of them: Virginia, DC and Maryland.
\n

Your first year, roughly

\n
• An active caseload of your own from the start.
\n
• Depositions first, then motions and hearings. Jury trials once you're ready, and they'll help you get ready.
\n
• Direct contact with national carriers on your own files.
\n
• Partners who have tried hundreds of cases, and direct access to them when you need a second opinion.
\n

The practice

• General liability and premises liability
\n
• Motor carrier
\n
• Workers' compensation
\n
• Professional liability
\n
• Ten more practice groups if you want to try something new
\n

How you'll work

\n
• Hybrid working, with time in the Fairfax office and time at home.
\n
• Reasonable hours, with real flexibility. The firm says your life outside the office is respected, and attorneys staying for decades suggests that's true.
\n

You

\n
• A Virginia license. That's essential. DC or Maryland on top is a plus.
\n
• Ideally 2 to 6 years of litigation experience. Newer attorneys will be considered, especially if you're keen to get into court.
\n
• Looking for a firm where you can build a whole career.
\n

On salary: the firm is hiring across two levels. Attorneys earlier in their career will start toward $130,000. An experienced associate who can run a full caseload and take a case to trial can earn up to $200,000.
